K.J. Yesudas, whose soul-stirring renditions have mesmerised music lovers the world over, turned 75 on Saturday. As is his wont, the legendary singer spent his birthday at the Sri Kollur Mookambika temple, seeking the blessings of the goddess of learning and music.
Yesudas, along with his wife, Prabha, and sons Vinod and Vijay, had arrived in the temple town on Friday evening. Reaching the temple around 9.45 a.m., he sang enchanting hymns and bhajans for nearly 30 minutes at a podium in the temple. A special concert, led by musician Kanhangad Ramachandran and attended by musicians from Kerala and outside, was held later, which went on till 2 p.m. A large number of pilgrims and music lovers had congregated at the temple to join the birthday celebration.
Earlier, the singer offered pujas in the temple. Yesudas gave away the maiden Souparnikamrutham Sangeetha Puraskaram instituted by the Sri Mookambika Sangeetharadhana Samithi to renowned classical musician Kumara Kerala Varma at a function in the temple.
The singer, along with family and friends, had a sumptuous birthday feast at the residence of a temple priest, later.
