Stir organised as part of Bharat Bachao Jana Andolan

Over 10 activists of the Youth Congress (YC) were injured when a demonstration that was taken out to Raj Bhavan turned violent on Tuesday.

The agitation was organised in connection with the nationwide Bharat Bachao Jana Andolan campaign of the Youth Congress in protest against the various policies of the BJP-led Central government. The demonstrators were obstructed well before Raj Bhavan by a large police posse that had erected barricades near the Vellayambalam junction.

Activists laid siege to the road, following which the agitation was formally inaugurated by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M.M. Hassan. Soon, the police began to forcibly remove the protesters, leading to a full-blown clash.

Besides using water cannons, the police fired over five rounds of tear gas shells to force the agitators to disperse. With some agitators attempting to jump over the barricades, the police also resorted to lathicharge.

Among those who sustained injuries, 10 protesters were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here. No one was critical, official sources said. As many as 16 activists, including Youth Congress State president Dean Kuriakose, were arrested and shifted to the Armed Reserve Camp at Nandavanam, before being let off on bail.
