Workers seek probe

June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Consumerfed Workers Association (CITU) has demanded that a thorough investigation be instituted into the functioning of Consumerfed. The association alleged that the new managing director was focusing only on the sale of beverages, neglecting the business of other commodities.

The association president V.V. Saseendran said Consumerfed was intended to distribute commodities at reduced rates. The present financial crisis of Consumerfed has arisen out of non-payment of arrears by the government. Consumerfed had provided commodities at subsidised rates as per government directions and an amount of Rs. 450 crore is due from the government on this count. Unauthorised employment of about 4,500 people had also contributed to the present crisis, he said.

The management was indulging in unilateral action against CITU leaders instead of adopting effective measures to counter the onslaught of retail giants in the market, he said. The association has threatened to launch an agitation against the attitude of the management.
