Lalur residents, who were forced to bear the brunt of garbage generated by the entire Thrissur city for many decades, have finally heaved a sigh of relief.

An indoor stadium of international standards is coming up on the trenching ground at Lalur at a cost of ₹46 crore.

Piling work for the stadium, named after eminent footballer I.M. Vijayan, is progressing. Along with the indoor stadium, a swimming pool and an administrative block will also be set up in the first phase.

The facilities will be built on 13.37 acres of land, which has been handed over to the Sports Department. The expected cost of the work is ₹46 crore. KITCO has undertaken the construction.

The work will be completed in two phases. A football stadium, hockey stadium, and tennis court will be constructed in the second phase. There will also be parking facility. The work is expected to complete in 2021. It was following decades of agitation by the local people that the Thrissur Corporation stopped dumping of waste at the Lalur dumping ground.
