Woman charred to death, husband in police custody

A 78-year-old woman died after being set ablaze by her husband in Manimala on Monday, the police said.

The deceased was identified as Shoshamma of Kavungal House in Charuvelil. The incident took place around 8 a.m. Her husband Varghese Mathew allegedly picked up an argument with her over a petty issue, poured kerosene over the woman and burnt her alive.

The woman, who had suffered about 80% burns, was rushed to the Government Medical College,where but succumbed to the injuries in the afternoon. According to the police, there was a long-standing dispute between the couple regarding the partition of a 70-cent property.

Varghese was taken into police custody and a case was registered. The body will be handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem examination on Tuesday.
