The body of a farmer was found in a coffee plantation near his house at Kurichipatta, near Pulpally, in the district on Tuesday morning. The police identified the deceased as Ramadas, 57, of Manikkadu at Kurichippatta under the Pulpally police station limits.
He allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison owing to financial distress, the police said.
His relatives said he had borrowed nearly ₹6 lakh from various sources, including the Meenangadi branch of the Kerala State Backward Classes Development Corporation and close to ₹1.7 lakh from friends, relatives and moneylenders from Tamil Nadu for the marriage of his daughter last year. However, he could not repay the debts on time, they said. It was suspected that the debts forced him to take the extreme step, his relatives said. Moreover, the moneylenders compelled him to repay their debts at once, they added.
Ramadas is survived by his wife Chandramathi and three children.
