The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is getting ready to launch the Wayanad Adventure Camp, the first of its kind in south India.

Set up on 13.4 acres near Karlad Lake, the camp would provide modern adventure tourism facilities to visitors, said P.P. Praveen, manager, Karlad Lake Tourism Centre.

Facilities for various adventure sports activities such as zip line, kayaking, climbing on rock panel, paint ball, archery, and land zorbing have been set up at the camp.

Cottages

Ten Swiss cottage tents attached with toilet facilities have been put up on the lakeshore besides four permanent cottages renovated for the boarding of tourists.

A zip line set up on a 50-m tower is a major attraction of the camp. A 250-m aerial rope slide across the lake would provide a wonderful experience to tourists. This is the longest zip line set up in the State, claims A. Ajith Menon, director of the Delhi-based company that installed the zip line.

A ride in a land zorbing ball on 100-metre slope near the lake is another attraction of the camp.

Ten canoes

“We have procured 10 canoes for kayaking. A floating boat-landing station would be set up on the lake that spread over 10.5 acres. Rowboats and pedal boats would be provided to the tourists,” Mr. Praveen said.

The landscaping works of the site is being done by the members of the High Tech Green Army under the Regional Agriculture Research Station at Ambalavayal.

The camp has been set up at a cost of Rs.73 lakh provided by the State Tourism Department and the DTPC, Mr. Praveen said adding that the camp would be opened to the public by the end of May.
