Authorities have promised that the upcoming waste-to-energy plant proposed at Chelora here will not cause any damage to the environment.
The assurance was given by representatives of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), the nodal agency for the project, at a meeting of stakeholders held at the chamber of District Collector Mir Muhammed Ali on December 17.
A press release said the project would be a replica of the successful models of waste-to-energy plants in other countries.
Model spot
The KSIDC officials told the meeting that the premises of the plant would be made as a model spot for educating the public about scientific waste management and its benefits. A strict monitoring mechanism would be put in place to ensure that Pollution Control Board norms are adhered to. The leachate and effluent gas coming out of the plant would be properly treated by the agency and would not have any kind of impact on residents and surrounding waterbodies, they said.
Understanding process
M.C. Dathan, scientific adviser to the Chief Minister, who was present at the meeting, briefed on the initiative taken by the State government for setting up waste-to-energy plants at various locations in the State. He also explained the bidding criteria and the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.
The KSIDC said Kannur Mayor E.P. Latha and councillors favoured such plants and wanted to understand the processes and facilities by visiting a working plant in the country.
It was agreed in the meeting to arrange a visit for representatives of the Corporation to a nearest plant at the earliest, the release said.
