Victory for UDF as Supreme Court upholds Kerala liquor policy

The Oommen Chandy government has received a shot in the arm with the >Supreme Court rejecting the batch of petitions filed by liquor bar owners challenging the liquor policy of the State government.

According to reports reaching Thiruvananthapuram, a Division Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Vikramajit Singh and Justice Shiva Kiriti Singh has upheld the liquor policy which has limited liquor sale to the five star hotels in the State. The liquor bar owners had approached the Supreme Court following rejection of their pleas by the Kerala High Court.

Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict, Excise Minister K. Babu said the government had come up with the new liquor policy with social welfare in view. “We are happy that the Supreme Court has accepted our stand,” he said.
