The Kondotty constituency will be a litmus test for the United Democratic Front (UDF) to ascertain whether the Congress-Muslim League bitterness displayed during the local body elections has vanished or not. The UDF has to prove that the unity it claims has come about in all local bodies that constitute the Kondotty Assembly constituency.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has fielded K.P. Veerankutty, an Independent with strong local roots, to take on the IUML’s first-timer T.V. Ibrahim.
It needs to be seen if Mr. Ibrahim can retain or improve the 2011 UDF lead of 28,149 votes his predecessor K. Mohammedunni Haji had secured in Kondotty. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the UDF secured a lead of 31,717 votes in Kondotty segment.
But the local body elections held in November last year gave fresh hopes to the LDF.
When the LDF secured the Kondotty municipality and Vazhakkad panchayat with the help of the Congress, Cheekode, Cherukavu and Pulikkal grama panchayats were in the hands of the UDF. Muthuvallur and Vazhayur grama panchayats too went the LDF way.
The BJP had polled 8.66 per cent votes in 2014 (Lok Sabha), 5.73 per cent in 2011 (Assembly), and 5.6 per cent in 2009 (LS) elections. The party has fielded K. Ramachandran this time in Kondotty.
