The dawn-to-dusk hartal announced by the United Democratic Front (UDF) district committee in Peerumade, Udumbanchola, Idukki and Devikulam assembly constituencies raising various demands including final notification of Kasturirangan report as per UDF government recommendation on Monday was peaceful and total in the district.

The hartal supporters held demonstration at various places and blocked roads in some junctions.

Nedumkandam police have registered a case for preventing the vehicle of a media person and trying to assault him at Nedumkandam. No major instance of violence reported in the district, said an official of Special Branch.

There was a holiday for educational institutions and buses kept off the roads. However, a few private vehicles plied on the roads. The Thodupuzha assembly constituency was exempted from the hartal.

The other demands included withdrawal of ban on constructions and tree felling in eight villages of Devikulam taluk, renewal of 1964 Land Assignment Act and title deed to all living in the Ten Chain area of Idukki dam.
