UAE announces long-term visas up to 10 years

Keralites stand to benefit from long-term visa scheme

The United Arab Emirates, which is home to the second-largest Indian expatriate population, has announced a long-term visa that allows professionals, entrepreneurs and highly talented students to live in the kingdom for up to 10 years.

The kingdom’s government on Monday approved norms for issuance of the long-term visas.

The special categories that are eligible for five-year visa and 10-year visa include investors, innovators, doctors, specialists, scientists and researchers in the fields of science and knowledge, creative individuals as well as talented students.

The UAE government had, in a path-breaking measure, announced in November last that it was considering giving long-term residence visa to select categories of expatriates.

Regulatory framework

On Monday, the Cabinet approved a regulatory framework for the visas. Indians, especially Keralites, stand to benefit from the long-term visa scheme.

This help the professionals, scientists, researchers and creative talents to plan a longer stay and career development.

The Cabinet has laid down specific criteria for those applying for the long-term visa. For instance, students opting for the visa should have 95% marks in their last exams and scientists need at least a PhD, apart from other qualifications.

Investors should have invested a specific sum of money. Specialist doctors should have at least 10 years' experience to qualify for the long-term visa.
