Two-day stir against Pollution Control Board order ends

Local people seek better sewage treatment in private hospital

May 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KANNUR:

A two-day stir by an action committee of local people against inadequate waste treatment facilities in a private hospital ended on Sunday. The stir, in front of Koyili Hospital here, was launched in association with the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP). P.K. Sreemathi, MP, inaugurated the stir on Saturday.

The action committee representatives said the protest was against the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) Chairman’s decision to give operational permit for the 120-bed in-patient facility at the hospital.

They alleged that the decision was in violation of norms, as the hospital did not have an efficient waste treatment plant. They demanded that the in-patient strength of the hospital be reduced to 50 beds.

A new sewage treatment plant and enforcement of the District Collector’s earlier ban on patients’ admission in the hospital were among the other demands.
