Two persons were killed and five others injured, two of them seriously, when an illegally stored cache of gunpowder caught fire near the Prathyaksha Raksha Daiva Sabha (PRDS) headquarters at Eraviperoor, near Thiruvalla, on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Gurudasan, 45, of Mahadevikad Madhavachira Kizhakkethil in Karthikappally, and his wife, Asha Gurudasan, 35.

Abhijith from Kayamkulam and Prabhakaran from Vallamkulam have been admitted to the medical college hospital in Kottayam with serious burns. Thejus from Ezhamkulam, Swarnamma from Neyyattinkara, and her daughter Vijayakumari, who too sustained severe burns, have been admitted to private hospitals in Thiruvalla.

The police said the explosion occurred in a temporary shed near the PRDS headquarters where disciples of Poikayil Sree Kumara Gurudevan had arrived to offer prayers around 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.

The police said the shed was pitched on the ground for stocking gunpowder for the devotees to offer ‘vedi vazhipadu’ at the shrine.

No permission

Superintendent of Police Jacob Jobb said the PRDS authorities had not been given permission to store the explosives.

The roof tiles of the nearby anganwadi building were damaged and the building wall developed cracks in the explostion. The windowpanes of another building in the 100-metre radius of the site were broken. The police said the ‘vedi vazhipadu’ was offered at the shrine at a rate of ₹30.

PRDS general secretary P.T. Chandrababu said the organisation had not entrusted anyone to conduct ‘vedi vazhipadu’. Mr. Chandrababu further sought a detailed inquiry into the explosion. The Thiruvalla police have registered a case and the forensic experts collected samples from the site. District Collector R. Girija visited the site.
