Two held, 3 kg of ganja seized

Half a tonne of ganja seized from Palakkad so far this year

The Excise special squad arrested two persons and seized 3 kg of ganja from them here on Sunday. The seizure was made during an intensive search held at different parts of the town as part of an ongoing special drive ahead of Onam festival.

The Excise units have seized half a tonne of ganja from Palakkad district in the current year. “This is a record. Nowhere in Kerala in the current year, 500 kg of ganja was seized. This time last year, we had seized 220 kg of ganja,” said V.P. Sulesh Kumar, Excise Deputy Commissioner.

The Excise special squad raided certain areas in the town on Sunday following a tip-off received by Circle Inspector M. Rakesh. The squad led by Excise Inspector T. Rajeev arrested Fayas, alias Hasanar, from Kasaragod and Rashid from Kudaku, Karnataka.

Hasanar was caught first with 1.4 kg of ganja. From him, the team gathered information about Rashid, and arrested him from the KSRTC bus-stand premises with 1.6 kg of ganja.

Rashid had procured the ganja from Bhairakkuppa in Karnataka, and brought it for distribution in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. He reportedly sells 70 kg of ganja every month. Intelligence sources said huge quantities of ganja were being brought to Kerala both by road and rail. Most seizures take place in Palakkad because the district is the entry point for the smugglers bringing the contraband from Andhra and Tamil Nadu. Excise Department seized 85 kg of ganja in August in Palakkad. The seizure in July was an all-time record of 139 kg. In June, 34.5 kg was seized. In May, the Excise seized 61 kg of ganja in Palakkad.

Other agencies

Apart from the Excise wing, other law enforcement bodies such as the police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) too had seized ganja in Palakkad. Several seizures were made by the RPF at Palakkad Junction Railway Station when the drugs were brought from Andhra by train. But intelligence sources indicated that hardly 15% of the ganja flowing into the State was being seized by the law enforcement wings.
