Two fishermen were killed and four others injured when high waves caused their boat to capsize off the Munduthura coast, near Anchuthengu, early Saturday.

The police identified the deceased as Carmel Lazar, 70, of Munduthura, and Sahayaraju, 56, of Chilanthimoodu. They said the accident occurred around 7 a.m. when the men encountered a huge wave, roughly 50 metres off the Munduthura coast, where they had gone fishing. T. Peter, general secretary of the National Fish Workers Forum, said fellow fishers soon organised a rescue effort and pulled all the six men out of the sea. However, they could not resuscitate two of them. The bodies were shifted to the Chirayinkeezhu taluk hospital. The Anchuthengu police registered a case of unnatural death.

Rough waves have prompted the authorities to caution fishers from venturing into the sea. But with livelihoods at stake, fishermen pay little heed to such warnings.
