Three tribal women were electrocuted and another one injured in the remote area of Mankulam, near Adimaly, in Idukki on Wednesday. The victims were identified as Chikkanamkudy Yasoda, 18; Salomi Kunjumon, 25; and Rajathi Mannan, 30. Vanitha, 20, of the same settlement was injured. Salomi Kunjumon was pregnant, said the police. A one-year-old child carried by Vanitha escaped unhurt.

According to the Munnar police, the accident occurred around 12.30 p.m. when the women were walking barefoot, carrying logs on their head.

P.T. Ajimon, assistant engineer, KSEB, at Mankulam told The Hindu that a pin insulator of an 11 kV line which connected three live lines got burnt, apparently by lightning. Electricity got directly conducted to earth, and the trio came into contact with it through soil dampened by rain. In the impact, they got thrown off the ground.

The bodies were taken for post-mortem examination at the taluk hospital at Adimaly.
