In a bid to address the health issues of transpersons, the district administration has rolled out a TG clinic exclusively for the community members.
The third in the State after Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, the clinic, functioning at Kollam District Hospital, will provide medical and psychological support to all individuals belonging to the third gender. “This exclusive OP facility ensures their privacy so that they can walk in and open up about their health issues,” said deputy DMO R. Sandhya here on Friday.
While a physician and dermatologist are part of the clinic, the services of other departments such as general surgery and gynaecology will be provided if required.
To tackle the mental challenges faced by the community members, the services of a psychiatrist and psychologist are also available.
“There are persons who want sexual reassignment surgery. We can help them with the primary counselling sessions and refer them to hospitals that conduct the surgery,” she said.
Dr. Sandhya said the information on the clinic has been communicated to various transgender forums so that maximum community members can use the facility. The clinic will be open on all Tuesdays.
