A two-day training camp on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) applications for members of Little KITEs clubs will be organised by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) at the subdistrict-level on September 29 and 30 and October 6 and 7.

The Little KITEs clubs currently comprise 58,380 student members from 1,901 schools. The two-day camp would be held for 14,000 of them who excelled in school-level training programmes, KITE vice chairman K. Anvar Sadath said.

Training centres were arranged in each of the 163 subdistricts for the camp, which would make use of FOSS alone. Mr. Sadath said arrangements had been made in the 275 training centres and 564 trainers assigned for the camp. It would feature flood-rescue game using Scratch visual programming software, making of mobile game and Torch app through App Inventor in which Android apps could be made using a drag-and-drop model, and of 3D animations using Blender software and 2D animations using TupiTube Desk, in addition to a special module on social engineering frauds and cyber safety.

The camp would include special sessions to equip the Little KITEs members to operate and maintain high-tech equipment in their classrooms. It would also be a selection platform for Little KITEs members to get into the revenue district camps.

The App Inventor and Scratch applications are applications used by renowned foreign universities for nurturing an interest in computer programming among students. The Blender tool is a free software application for creating 3D animation designs, replacing the proprietary Autodesk Maya application.

The Little KITEs programme was started in the State Schools earlier this year.
