Steps are on for total electrification of the district, round-the-clock power supply and checking transmission and distribution losses under two Central schemes.
An official press release here on Monday said that efforts are under way by Kannur MP, P.K. Sreemathi to seek funds under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grama Jyothi Yojana (DDUGJY) and Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS).
While DDUGJY is a scheme exclusively for rural areas, the IPDS is a project for urban areas. The MP has proposed works estimated at total Rs. 106 crore under the DDUGJY in the district and works estimated at Rs. 293 crore under the IPDS.
Rs. 51 cr.granted
The district has already been granted Rs. 51 crore under the two schemes, the release said. The electrical section offices included in the seven statutory town schemes in the district have been sanctioned funds under the schemes. The statutory towns with the funds allotted to them in brackets are as follows: Kannur town (Rs. 6 crore), Kannur cantonment (Rs. 7 crore), Thalassery (Rs. 10 crore), Koothuparamba (Rs. 8 cr.), Taliparamba (Rs. 8 cr.), Mattannur (Rs. 8 crore), Payyannur (Rs. 6 crore).
