A team of experts from Parson Overseas Ltd., New Delhi, on Monday started tomography test in the Mullaperiyar dam on the direction of the empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court to look into the safety, security and strengthening measures of the dam. The test may take up to a week. The team from the company reached Kumily on Sunday.
A senior official of the Irrigation Department told The Hindu on Monday that it was not clear whether the team would continue the test for more than a week. He said the officials of the Public Works Department, Tamil Nadu, had informed the officials of Kerala regarding the visit only on Sunday. A representative of the Kearala government accompanied the team. The test is being conducted on the direction of the Tamil Nadu government, the official said.
Mediapersons were not allowed entry to the area. The official said on Tuesday, officials of Irrigation Department, Kerala, would join the team in Mullaperiyar.
The Supreme Court had given an extension to the empowered committee to submit the final report, prompting more tests to ascertain the present condition of the dam.
