The coastal belt in the district has started bearing the brunt of the arrival of monsoon in the State.

One woman was killed, and three houses were damaged in the district in rain-related incidents.

Beevathumol (60) of Thiruvathra was killed when the wall of her neighbour’s house collapsed and fell on her. Though she was rushed to a hospital, her life could not be saved.

Two houses collapsed at Methala in the heavy rain. No casualty was reported.

Sea erosion

The district has also started witnessing the impact of the rough sea with the strengthening of the monsoon. The impact of sea erosion is severe in Kodungallur taluk. Eriyad, West Vemballur, Edavilangu and Kara panchayats are the worst hit. Sea water inundated several houses in the area. The sea wall from Azhikode to Perinjanam has almost collapsed as huge tidal waves lashed against them. Hundreds of coconut trees were uprooted.

The coastal belt in Chavakkad is also faced with the threat of sea erosion.

Damage to standing crops has been reported from many areas in the district.

Meanwhile a spurt in monsoon diseases, including fever and diarrhoea, has been reported in the district.

The Health officials have warned the public against the outbreak of epidemics. Preventive measures have been taken against the diseases and all hospitals have sufficient supply of epidemics.
