Thumbs up to Chandy regime

: Nair Service Society general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair on Saturday sent a strong message to political circles that the NSS was happy with the treatment it had got from the Oommen Chandy government.

Delivering  the 101st annual budget speech at Perunna, near here, Mr. Nair said the last four years were the most fruitful in the decades-long fight of the organisation to secure the legitimate demands of the community.

Listing the achievements of the community under the Chandy regime, Mr. Nair pointed out that the new climate assumed special significance as the earlier governments had not taken the initiative to implement the NSS demands.

“The present dispensation has accepted that the demands are legitimate and in consonance with the fight for social justice by the NSS as it would benefit the deprived from all communities,” he said.

The State government initiative in the constitution of a welfare board for the economically backward among the forward communities should open the eyes of the Union government which had not taken note of the issue so far, he said.

Other achievements include the decision to withdraw the earlier move to entrust Devaswom board appointments to the Public Service Commission, sanctioning of user fee for conduct of PSC examinations, and declaration of Mannam Jayanthi as public holiday.
