The Thrissur Town Hall will be named after the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran and his statue will be erected before it.

The Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned Rs.30 lakh for making the statue. The decision was taken considering that the first death anniversary of Karunakaran (December 23) was approaching, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the Cabinet meeting.

The Cabinet decided to grant 3.6 cents of government land near the Ernakulam Press Club to the club on lease. The land, belonging to the Public Works Department, would be transferred to the Revenue Department for this purpose.

It also decided to grant Rs.6 lakh to a family at Porur in Malappuram district which saw three of its members dying from electric shock from a power line while plucking drumsticks.

The family of B.Tech. student Vineeth who met with an accident during the Kalpathy car festival would be paid Rs.2 lakh as solatium.

The housing loan of Ajikumar who died while working as a peon in the Law Department of the Secretariat would be written off, considering the financial position of his family.
