: Renovation work worth Rs. 3 crore is slated to begin at the Sakthan Thampuran market from Tuesday.
As the first step, roads inside the market will be concreted and canals and culverts also will be repaired. The design has been prepared by experts after testing the soil structure, Mayor Rajan Pallan said.
Concreting of roads at Sakthan Thampuran market was a demand by the traders and public. The broken floor and damaged roads used to turn the market and the surroundings to a slush pool when it rained.
The concreting work will be done in phased manner as it will take at least 21 days for the concrete to set. The work will be done in a transparent manner and the details of the work at vegetarian and non-vegetarian stalls will be displayed at the market, he added.
Meanwhile the pre-monsoon cleaning of canals under the Corporation limit started on Monday. Though unexpected summer rains created hurdles for the cleaning works, the Mayor assured that the world would be completed soon.
The weeds and shrubs along the canals will be removed to ensure the uninterrupted flow of water.
The health inspectors have been entrusted with the work of de-silting the canals. An amount of Rs. 14 lakh has been allotted for this, the Mayor said. The health department has already started sanitation drive, including chlorination of open wells ahead of monsoon.
