Three Indian Youth Congress (IYC) leaders from Kannur in Kerala have been placed under suspension by the IYC national leadership over the public slaughter of an young ox on May 27 in a protest against the Central government's notification banning sale of cattle for slaughter.

The suspension of president of the IYC Kannur Parliament constituency committee Rijil Makutty, IYC State general secretary Joshi Kandathil and local IYC leader Sharafuddin followed Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's condemnation on Sunday of the butchering of the animal in public and distribution of its meat.

Mr. Gandhi in his Twitter handle termed the incident "thoughtless and barbaric" and unacceptable.

The Kannur city police also registered a case against Mr. Makutty and others for slaughtering the animal in public.

BJP State president Kummanam Rajashekharan posted a video of the slaughter in his Twitter account, saying that it was "cruelty at its peak."
