Three suspected Bangla nationals detained

Brought to Cochin airport from Dubai

Three suspected Bangladesh nationals holding Indian passports were detained at the Cochin international airport at Nedumbassery on Thursday after being deported from Dubai.

They were identified as Ajay Chowdhury, 30, Shubro Barua, 30, and Avi Mukherjee, 24. All three are relatives and hail from Chittagong in Bangladesh, police sources said.

Surnames changed

Except for Shubro the other two had reportedly changed their surnames to sound Indian.

They departed for Dubai from Hyderabad en route to Serbia on Indian passports on Wednesday. However, authorities there grew suspicious of their credentials and deported them back to India.

They arrived here by a Fly Dubai flight in the morning.

“They held genuine Indian passports, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and voter identity cards, which they had reportedly secured using forged documents with the help of an agent in Kolkata,” the police said.

After crossing the Bangladesh border they proceeded to Hyderabad where they were staying since October 2017. Passports of all the three issued from Hyderabad show Jalpaiguri in West Bengal as their place of birth. The passports of Ajay and Avi were issued in March this year and that of Shubro in August.

They admitted to their nationality after a few hours of interrogation by emigration sleuths drawn from the Intelligence Bureau and State Police.

The Nedumbassery police registered a case invoking IPC Section 419 (cheating by personation) and Sections 12 (1) (b) and 12 (1) (a) of the Passports Act.

The accused were handed over to the district Crime Branch.
