Kannur reports 27 new COVID-19 cases; new containment zones declared in Thrissur

Thirty-four persons tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Malappuram district on Wednesday. While 25 of them were returnees from abroad, nine had come back from other States, said Malappuram District Collector K. Gopalakrishnan. He said all of them were admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri.

As many as 266 infected persons are currently under treatment in Malappuram.

District Medical Officer K. Sakeena said that 32,360 persons were currently under observation.

In Palakkad

Seventeen persons tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Palakkad on Wednesday. All of them were returnees either from abroad or from other States.

Three of them had returned from Delhi, two from Tamil Nadu, one from Maharashtra, two from Kuwait, three from Oman, and two each from the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The number of infected persons currently under treatment in Palakkad is 283.

In Kannur

Kannur again saw a surge in COVID-19 cases with 27 more persons testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the district.

According to District Collector T.V. Subhash, of the 27 cases, 13 returned from abroad, six came from other States, six were CISF personnel, one person was a Defence Security Corps staff, and one person got infected through contact.

The district now has 22,801 persons under observation. Among them, 22,459 are in home quarantine.

In Thrissur

COVID-19 was confirmed for 16 more persons in Thrissur on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases reported in the district to 419. Among them, eight were expatriates and five came from other States.

Three persons were infected through contact. A 56-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman from Irinjalakuda, who were the contacts of a COVID-19 patient who returned from UAE, and a 37-year-old woman who contracted the virus from a Kuwait returnee, were tested positive.

Containment zones

Three more containment zones have been declared in Thrissur district for the prevention of COVID-19. Wards 11 and 12 of Sreenarayanapuram grama panchayat and division 51 of the Thrissur Corporation are the new zones.

Kattakambal, Vellankallur and Kadavallur panchayats and Kunnamkulam Municipality have been excluded from the containment zone list. Divisions 3 and 32 of the Thrissur Corporation too were excluded.

In Kasaragod

Ten more persons tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Kasaragod district on Wednesday.

Among them, six had returned from abroad, three came from other States while one got infected through contact, said District Medical Officer A.V. Ramdas.

There are 7,201 persons in the district under observation.

In Kozhikode

The number of people recovered from COVID-19 infection exceeded those who were declared tested positive for the virus in Kozhikode district on Wednesday.

According to a release by District Medical Officer V. Jayasree, 15 people were cured while only six others were newly added to the list of those infected in the district.

Meanwhile, a 68-year-old native of Nadakkavu in the city, who committed suicide earlier, was declared tested positive for the virus. The number of active COVID-19 cases in Kozhikode district came down to 83.

Meanwhile, 692 persons were newly added to the list of those under observation, taking the total number to 19,143.

In Wayanad

Wayanad district on Wednesday reported three more COVID-19 cases.

Officials said a 31-year-old man from Rippon near Meppadi who came from Sharjah, a 40-year-old tribal woman from Micha Bhoomi tribal hamlet Aranappara near Thirunelly who returned from neighbouring district Kodagu in Karnataka, and a 36-year-old man from Chennalode who had returned from Bengaluru tested positive for the virus.

All of them were shifted to the District Hospital at Mananthavady.
