G. Mahadevan, 47, Senior Assistant Editor, The Hindu , Thiruvananthapuram, passed away at a private hospital here on Saturday.
A postgraduate in English literature, Mr. Mahadevan had joined the newspaper as a staff reporter in 1996. He covered education and was its city editor in Thiruvananthapuram during 2014-15.
Mr. Mahadevan was a skilled debater, public speaker and an avid Carnatic music enthusiast. He had also lent his voice to several English television and film documentaries.
Mr. Mahadevan was an alumnus of Loyola School and Mar Ivanios College here.
He is survived by wife Devi, daughter Mrinalini, father Ganapathy Iyer and mother Bhagavathy Ammal.
Journalists and people from various walks of life paid their last respects to Mr. Mahadevan at his home in Kowdiar and later at the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram, where his body was kept before cremation.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan offered his condolences to the bereaved family. In a message, Mr. Vijayan said Mr. Mahadevan had creatively and memorably intervened through The Hindu to bring about positive changes in the field of higher education.
Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said Mr. Mahadevan’s death was a personal loss for him. He said journalism had lost one of its skilled and creative practitioners in Mr. Mahadevan’s departure.
Education Minister C. Ravindranath said Mr. Mahadevan’s demise was a loss to the State’s education sector. He said he remembered Mr. Mahadevan for his analytical approach to issues relating to the higher education sector in Kerala.
The Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram, and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists have offered their sympathies to Mr. Mahadevan’s family.
A condolence meeting is being organised by the Press Club here at 12 p.m. on Monday.
