Tharoor: Kerala may not get IIT

December 25, 2012 02:51 pm | Updated 02:51 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Proposals for an IIT in the State, a High Court Bench in the capital city, and the upgrade of Cochin University of Science and Technology into an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) are unlikely to materialise, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor has said.

The Minister told a ‘meet-the-press’ programme organised by the Kesari Memorial Journalists Trust here on Monday that as a central university and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research had been sanctioned to the State, approval is unlikely for an IIT too.

Mr. Tharoor said that his repeated efforts to secure a Bench for the capital city had not yielded the desired result. A Private Member’s Bill introduced in Parliament was listed for consideration in the monsoon session, but it could not be taken up due to the Opposition’s protest, Mr. Tharoor said.
