Tea plants damaged in cold wave

Munnar continued to be in the grip of a cold wave with mercury falling to -40 C on Friday. Chenduvari recorded morning temperature of -40 C while Munnar town, Chittuvarai, Ellapetty, and Thenmala recorded 00 C.

Temperature had fallen to -40 C in Munnar last Monday, the first in a decade. The continuing cold wave has damaged tea plants in nearly 1,000 hectares.An official of Harrisons Malayalam Plantation said 90 ha was affected in frost while Kanan Devan Hills Plantation estimated nearly 900 ha as frost-hit.

It was for the first time in recent years that mercury continued to be below 00 C for over a week.
