The Kerala State Electricity Board has constituted a ‘mission reconnect task force’ for restoring power supply in the flood-affected districts.

A special cell will function round the clock under the supervision of Director (Distribution) to monitor the functioning of the task force.

Committees headed by the Deputy Chief Engineers of Kalpetta, Thrissur, Irinjalakuda, Peumbavoor, Ernakulam, Thodupuzha, Haripad, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta electrical circles and Assistant Engineers in electrical sections in the flood-affected areas would also monitor the restoration activities. Chief Engineers have been designated to monitor the functioning of the task force in each district.

Functioning of 28 substations and five generating stations was stopped in the wake of the flood.

Five minor hydel stations were damaged in the floods. The loss due to damage of equipment has been estimated at ₹350 crore.

The total revenue loss has been pegged at ₹470 crore.

The board had switched off 10,000 transformers in the flood-hit areas to avert accidents and 4,500 of them have been charged once the water receded. As many as 1,200 transformers still remain submerged. Steps were being taken to make them functional, a board release said here on Monday.

In those areas where power restoration is likely to be delayed, the board has decided to check leakage in each house and provide at least one light and plug point. Streetlights would be installed once the local bodies provide the lights. A facility for charging mobile phones would be set up at board section offices, relief camps, and other public places.

Priority has been attached for resuming supply in drinking water pumping stations, hospitals, and such other places. Domestic connections would be resumed after ensuring safety, the release said.
