In a major boost to Palakkad’s aspirations in the field of athletics, the work for laying a synthetic track on the ground of newly started Government Medical College at Yakkara will begin here on Monday.

Olympian Anju Bobby George will be the chief guest on the occasion. Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the work. Minister A.P. Anil Kumar, M.B. Rajesh, MP and Shafi Parambil, MLA, will attend the inaugural function.

The State Sports Council had released Rs.5 crore to begin the work on the track.

Once completed, it would be one of the biggest achievements for athletics in North Kerala and help prepare athletes for major international competitions, said Shafi Parambil, MLA. The total cost of the track is estimated at Rs 6.76 crore. Rest of the amount would be collected locally, he said.

An expert committee found the medical college ground suitable after verifying possibilities of it along with that of Stadium Ground and Victoria College Ground. The construction would be in three phases and there would be eight lines on the track.
