The list of political leaders who have tasted the ire of the Nair Service Society (NSS) leadership is long, but it might be the first time that a ‘superstar’ was at the receiving end. Actor and political aspirant Suresh Gopi on Saturday got a dressing down from NSS supremo G. Sukumaran Nair.

It was the occasion of the 101st annual budget session of the NSS, and the actor in true film style walked into the Prathinidhi Sabha hall, considered the parliament of the community, and directly went up to Mr. Nair.

The NSS leader, an astute politician, smelt a rat. “You should not have done this. I do not like this,” Mr. Nair openly told Mr. Gopi.

Later, while responding to questions during the budget, he made it amply clear that he would not like anyone to make a political killing at the cost of the NSS.

Referring to the timing of Mr. Gopi’s newfound love for the NSS, Mr. Sukumaran Nair likened the visit to the one made by Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan to the widow of slain Left leader T.P. Chandrasekharan on the eve of the Neyyattinkara by-election.

“We will not allow anyone to exploit the NSS to serve parochial interests,” Mr. Nair said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gopi told presspersons that he had arrived to pay homage at the Mannam Samadhi.

It was one of the delegates who had taken him to the hall and the NSS general secretary, he said.
