Walking into a flood-hit home at Chittattukara panchayat in North Paravur on Friday morning, Ardhra could imagine the fury of rushing waters that had shattered the lives of Pookoya and his family. The young engineering student then requested the daily wage labourer and his wife to answer a few questions on the extent of damage while her friends entered the data into a survey sheet.

Ardhra, a third semester student of Civil Engineering, was among the 70 students of the College of Engineering (CET), Thiruvananthapuram, who reached North Paravur to survey flood-ravaged homes in ward no. 15 of the panchayat as part of an assignment.

Joy Varghese V.M, faculty member, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Programme Officer of the NSS unit at CET, said the students joined the survey to assess the flood damage being undertaken by the Department of Local Self Government. “We have been involved in various relief and re-building initiatives after the floods had turned lethal by August 16. The objective of the survey is to make an assessment of the losses suffered by the flood-hit families,” Ms. Ardhra said.

The youngsters from CET were assisted by nearly 45 students of Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, from August 28. “Our team visited over 1, 500 homes in eight wards to collect the data,” said Jerin, a fifth semester student of Electrical Engineering at Mar Baselios.

Athul, a fifth semester student of Industrial Engineering of CET, said they visited over 500 homes in ward no. 15 as part of the survey till Friday evening.

“The data will be submitted to the government for follow-up action,” said Jinu Baby, Programme Officer of NSS unit at Mar Baselios.
