The district collectorate here witnessed commotion on Thursday morning when employees supporting the one-day strike called by pro-Left Action Council of State Employees and Teachers and those opposing it confronted each other.

A section of the strike supporters stopped the vehicle of Assistant Collector Haritha V. Kumar.  This was opposed by the employees affiliated to pro-government unions. Heated exchanges followed on the collectorate campus. The police had to intervene to separate the two groups.

District Collector P. Bala Kiran, Additional District Magistrate O. Muhammad Aslam, and Assistant Collector Haritha V. Kumar reached the office in the morning. The strike, which is for immediate implementation of pay revision and interim relief, affected the functioning of many government offices and educational institutions in the district.

Official sources said 30 to 40 per cent of government employees and teachers in the district took part in the strike.

An estimated five per cent of employees were on leave, they said.
