Society to be formed for welfare of prisoners

: Minister for Home Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday dedicated to the country the first high-security prison in the State, built with most modern security facilities at Viyyur.

However, the high security prison will start functioning only after the employees recruited for it complete a special training course, the Minister said.

The prisons in the State will be transformed into correction centres for the inmates, said the Minister. He, however, turned down the demand to change the uniform in the prisons.

“Setting up of a special society for the welfare of prisoners is under active consideration of the government. A profit of more than Rs.6 crore has been made by the sale of food products though jail counters. This entire amount would be utilised for the welfare of prisoners,” he said.

Mr. Chennithala said steps had been taken to fill vacancies in prisons. More than 900 appointments had been made in the State’s prisons in the last two years, he noted.

The Viyyur High Security Prison has been built with Rs.26.5 crore allotted under the 13th Finance Commission. Built on 9.5 acres of land in the Viyyur Central Prison compound, the high-security prison of 1.10 lakh sq ft area has 192 cells. It can accommodate 500 inmates. It has most-modern facilities, including full body scanner, CCTV camera, baggage scanner, biometric verification system, computerised data management system, electric fencing, videoconferencing, and telemedicine.

The jail will house those convicted of terrorist and anti-national activities.

A new staff quarters for the officials of the high-security prison, built at a cost of Rs.4.97 crore, was also inaugurated at the function.

Minister for Cooperation C.N. Balakrishnan presided. Mayor Ajitha Jayarajan; C.N. Jayadevan, MP; Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA; Jail DGP Rishi Raj Singh; District Collector V. Ratheesan; and others participated in the programme.
