The State’s first state-of-the-art ‘Ideal Laboratory’ will be opened at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS), Haripad, on Wednesday by Education Minister C. Ravindranath.
The high-tech lab, set up under a project of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and the State government at a cost of ₹50 lakh, was scheduled to be launched in August but floods delayed its opening.
“The lab is going to help the students in a great way. The school has provided the necessary infrastructure while the RMSA funded all the equipment for the lab,” said Satheesh Aattupuram, president, Parent-Teacher Association, GBHSS.
The lab will revolutionise science education at the secondary level. It will allow students to perform experiments mentioned in their textbooks in a sequential manner and even take up advanced-level experiments.
Officials said it was a project aimed at taking science education in secondary schools to the next level.
Science hub
“Science labs in schools lack facilities. The Ideal labs will act as a science hub where students can conduct experiments in physics, chemistry and biology. It is equipped with modern equipment and technologies. Secondary-level students can experience facilities available at a science lab in a college at the Ideal lab. This will help students to go beyond classrooms and textbooks and attain more knowledge. The labs will nourish hidden talents in students,” said an RMSA official.
Officials added that students of other schools in the district could also use the lab at the GBHSS, Haripad.
Other than the GBHSS, Haripad, the labs are coming up at the AGHSS, Kodoth, Kasaragod; IMNS GHSS, Mayyil, Kannur; GHSS, Kottayi, Palakkad; and GBHSS, Chalakudy, Thrissur.
The project cost of setting up a lab includes that for experiments and equipment. Schools have to provide building and infrastructure such as tiling, electricity and water.
