State undergoing rapid urbanisation: Minister

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhi Ali has said that the State has been undergoing rapid urbanisation at a rate of 25 per cent during the previous quarter of a century.

He was speaking while inaugurating the V.K. Soman memorial municipal bus stand here on Thursday. The first phase of the construction work has been completed.

Mr. Ali pointed out that the State faced various challenges during the urbanisation process. “As in the case of Alappuzha, where a large number of tourists frequent, there existed the possibility of contamination of drinking water sources owing to the toilet waste discharged from house boats. The government was ready to launch the construction of a septage treatment plant within a month if the Alappuzha municipality provided the required land,” he said. – Staff Reporter
