The State government will bear the expense for repair of the collapsed bunds that led to the heavy floods in Kuttanad. Households in the flooded areas will be supplied with coir mats to be laid over wet floors.

New buildings will be constructed for schools and children given special classes to make up for the days lost.

The Cabinet here on Wednesday ratified proposals to clean up the clogged drainage channels to drain out floodwaters and speed up the work on water supply projects. Sand bars would be opened to relieve the flood situation in the coastal areas.

The meeting also decided to raise and reconstruct bridges that pose a hindrance to water traffic in Kuttanad. The project would be taken up under the RIDF scheme of NABARD. More water ambulances would be pressed into service in Kuttanad to assist flood victims. Hospitals in the flood-affected areas were equipped with anti-venom for snake bite victims in the waterlogged areas.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government would organise a special adalat in Kuttanad from August 16 to 31 for stricken citizens to apply for replacement of vital documents lost in the floods. Payment of electricity and water charges would be deferred till January 2019 for the affected families.

He added that public sector and cooperative banks had been directed to provide new loans for the stricken households. The Chief Minister said a massive cleaning drive would be taken up in Kuttanad once the flood waters receded. Volunteers from across the State would be enlisted in the campaign. Damaged roads would be repaired. Compensation for crop loss would be paid as per norms, he added.
