Kerala in the running for national institutes: Minister

Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State, Department of AYUSH, has said the State’s claims will also be considered while allotting the national institute of medicinal plants and the national institute of geriatrics.

The Union government had earmarked Rs.100 crore for setting up a national institute of medicinal plants and Rs.50 crore for a national institute of geriatrics.

Mr. Naik was interacting with the media on the sidelines of an Ayurveda conference organised by the Ayurvedic Medicine Manufactures Organisation of India in association with the BJP Industrial Cell here on Wednesday.

Visa restrictions

The Minister also promised to have discussions with the External Affairs Minister and the Tourism Minister for lifting restrictions for those visiting the country on tourist visa to undergo ayurveda treatment.

Addressing the function, Mr. Naik appreciated the quality of healthcare facilities in Kerala.

He promised look into the problems faced by the ayurveda sector.

Delivering the keynote address, P.R. Krishna Kumar, chairman of Care Keralam and MD of AVP, Coimbatore, said Ayurveda should be considered as a mainstream system instead of an alternative system as it had been used for curing diseases for ages.

Ayurveda 2020

Vision for Ayurveda 2020, a vision document on ayurveda, was handed over to the Minister by Dr. Krishna Kumar. It highlighted the need for policy changes and political will in favour of developing ayurveda.

The conference stressed the need for conserving medicinal plants.
