Support for ‘We the People’ convention, to celebrate the values and ideals of the Constitution and democracy, is growing, say the organisers of the meet.

The meet, a day-long celebration, will be held at the Central Stadium on Tuesday from 10 a.m. onwards.

“Constitution stands for inclusion, while the various kinds of beliefs usually exclude another set of people. We should not allow any belief system to be placed above the Constitution, which protects all our rights. All of us here came together naturally, after seeing how our streets and our conversation were being taken over by those with extreme views and those having no respect for our Constitution,” said Maithreyan, one of the ‘citizens’, who are taking part in the movement.

Awareness campaigns

The members of the group has been holding awareness campaigns on college campuses, ahead of the main event on Tuesday.

Painting and music sessions have been happening in front of the Secretariat over the past three days.

Public could approach the artists at the stall here to get their portraits done.

A sculpture on the ‘Maaru marakkal’ protest, for the rights to wear clothes on the upper body, has been put up.

Another sculpture on Ayyankali’s ‘Villuvandi protest’ will also be put up on Monday.

Band performance

On Tuesday, the events will begin with a performance by the band ‘Oorali’, followed by which the preamble of the Constitution will be read out. In addition to speeches by writers, activists and cultural leaders, there will be a drama by the APT theatre group, performance of protest songs by the band ‘Gravity’, folk songs by Jayachandran Kadambanad, and other events.

Magenta has been chosen as the colour code of the event, as it is “one of the few colours that is not associated with any political party,” according to the organisers.
