Carrying irumudis on their shoulders, a seven-member roller skating team from Kollam kicked off their annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala on Tuesday.

It is for the 19th consecutive year that the skating enthusiasts from the district are undertaking this unique trip with a mission to spread awareness of fitness and Clean Kerala.

This year the message of the skating pilgrimage is ‘avoid lifestyle diseases through sports’ and ‘communal harmony’.

Flagged off

The pilgrimage was flagged off by T.R. Santhosh Kumar, chairman of the Education and Sports Standing Committee of the Kollam Corporation, from the Kottarakulam Maha Ganapati temple near the Kollam Collectorate. P.R. Balagopal, S. Biju, Auraj Peringavil, T.S. Adarash, B.G. Balshreyas, Sibi Sukumaran and Nitin Raj are the members of the team.

The skaters would pass High School Junction, Anchalumoodu, Perinad, Kundara and Kottarakara on the first day, reaching Pathanamthitta through Adoor, said the organisers.

After offering floral tributes in front of the Gandhi statue at the junction, they will reach Perunad by the evening.

On Wednesday, the team will resume the journey via Laha arriving at Pampa from where they will proceed to the hill-top shrine of Sabrimala by foot.

The team members include State and district-level skaters, State roller hockey players and coaches.
