A sub-inspector (SI) sustained serious injuries in an attack by suspected sand smugglers at Thiruvattur, near Pariyaram, here on Saturday.

K.M. Rajan, 52, was admitted to the Pariyaram Medical College and later to a private hospital in Kozhikode. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. He was attacked when he tried to prevent sand smuggling at Parolikkadavu, the police said. Mr. Rajan had tried to stop a sand-laden mini lorry. He went to the area on a motorcycle with a civil police officer following information that illegal sand-mining and sale was going on there.

When the sand smugglers did not stop the vehicle, Mr. Rajan managed to get inside the driver’s cabin. The lorry sped away and the civil police officer alerted the Pariyaram police station.

A team of police personnel searched the area and found the SI lying unconscious in a pool of blood in an uninhabited spot.
