The case relating to the custodial death of financier Rajkumar at the Nedumkandam police station took a new twist on Monday with K.A. Sabu, Sub-Inspector who has been suspended and arrested in the case, stating before the High Court in his bail petition that Rajkumar was arrested and detained on directives of the DySP, Kattappana, and the Superintendent of Police, Idukki.

As a loyal officer, he had obeyed the directives of his superior officers. In fact, the superior officers had been kept informed of the updates on the search and other information on the investigation, the petitioner said.

He said he had not illegally detained Rajkumar on his own. In fact, it was done as per the directives of his senior officers.

Besides, the deceased was examined by doctors three times before he was produced before the magistrate court concerned.

Rajkumar did not then raise any allegation of assault by the petitioner or other officers. Besides, the certificates issued by the doctors showed that the deceased had difficulty in walking. No injuries had been recorded in the certificates.

“Role of jailers”

After the incident, a few jail officials of the Peerumade sub-jail had been suspended and transferred. This clearly indicated the role of jailers in the crime.

When the bail petition came up for hearing, the High Court asked the government to respond to the plea of the accused and adjourned the hearing on the petition.

HC calls for reports

Meanwhile, the High Court asked the prosecution to furnish reports, including the re-postmortem report.

The court passed the directive when a petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case came up for hearing .The petition was filed by the wife and children of the deceased.
