: Security has been tightened in the district for the visit of AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi. He will attend the fish workers’ protest meet at Chavakkad beach on Wednesday morning.

‘Sea for children of sea’ will be the slogan of the meet, which is being organised to protest against the anti-people policies of the Union government. The demands of the fishermen include withdrawal of Dr. Meenakumari and Dr. Syda Rao committee reports, revising the quota of kerosene supplied to fish workers, amendment of central policy to give free hand for corporates for fishing, withdrawal of the decision to make passport mandatory for deep sea fishing and a social security package for fish workers.

Mr. Gandhi spent Tuesday night at Ramanilayam, the government guest house at Thrissur. Sources say Mr. Gandhi would be served traditional Kerala fare for breakfast at Ramanilayam on Wednesday morning.The police conducted trial run for his journey from Kozhikode to Thrissur on Monday itself. City Police Commissioner R. Nishanthini and Rural SP N. Vijayakumar led the rehearsal of Mr. Gandhi’s trip from Ramanilayam to Chavakkad. More than 100 police personnel participated in the rehearsal.

Mr. Gandhi will visit the fishermen’s colony in Chavakkad ahead of the meeting. Mr. Gandhi will interact with selected members.
