The South Indian Science Fair, being held at Thekkinkadu maidan, presents innovations of young talents from various south Indian States.
There was heavy rush of students in the morning to watch the fair, which began on Monday.
A special radio made by Sreeram, a student of Vidyasree High School, Karaikal, Puducherry, has caught the attention of many as it helps the hearing and speech impaired to hear news and enjoy music.
The eighth standard student made this radio a year back to help his grandfather. In this radio, sound waves are converted to mechanical energy, which is transferred to a metal plate through a valve. If a person bites the metal plate between his teeth, he can experience sound.
Sreeram had exhibited his radio at the Tamil Nadu State Science Fair.
Aswin Raj, a Class X student from Thiruvananthapuram, has prepared a plastic recycling machine. When plastic and plastic waste are being considered as the greatest threat to the environment, Aswin Raj’s invention will help turn this waste to wealth.
A project presented by S. Puja of Sreeramakrishna Vidhyasala, Chidambaram, demonstrates how to make firework units safe.
Fireworks units should be constructed with tin or aluminium roofing. Above the roof a water tank should be set up with tin sheets having perforations, which are closed with wax. In the event of an explosion, the wax will melt and water will flow to the unit, thus functioning as a fire rescue unit.
Addressing the inaugural function, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the country could achieve progress only through advancements in science and technology. The fair, organised by the State Department of Public Instructions in association with the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore, will conclude on January 10.
More than 600 participants from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry are participating in the fair. Around 300 stalls have been arranged for the fair.
