Ruckus over patient’s death at hospital

June 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

A 59-year-old cancer patient undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Alappuzha, died on Monday while radiation therapy was being administered.

The patient, Thilakan, a resident of Kottankulangara here, had undergone neurosurgery a week ago, hospital officials said.

The patient fell from the table while radiation therapy was being given. He was immediately taken to the casualty ward, where he was declared dead. Relatives of the patient alleged that the incident happened because of negligence of the staff who attended on him.

They alleged that the patient was not tied down to the table with a belt, which was refuted by the staff.

DYFI activists staged a march to the hospital, alleging negligence of doctors and paramedical staff. Medical college superintendent Santosh Raghavan said a four-member team would inquire into the incident.
