City Police Commissioner P. Prakash has said the increasing number of road accidents in the district calls for urgent steps to create more awareness on road discipline.
He said this while addressing a gathering after inaugurating a two-day road safety training programme of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) for 100 teachers from schools under the jurisdiction of the city police.
Mr. Prakash said that figures for last year showed that accidents in Kollam city were high compared to any other police district. Last year 220 persons lost their lives in road accidents under the jurisdiction of the city police and 45 per cent of them were between the ages of 18 and 30, he said. After the training, the teachers will spread awareness on road safety among students of their respective schools.
The function was presided over by NATPAC director B.G. Sreedevi. Joint Regional Transport Officer Venugopalan Potty, District Education Officer P.P. Thankam, and NATPAC Registrar George Koshy among others spoke.
