Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has announced a nine-point programme for the comprehensive development of Wayanad district.
He was speaking after inaugurating a mass contact programme, ‘Karuthal,’ at the SKMJ higher secondary school ground here on Monday.
Mr. Chandy said that the dearth of modern medical care facilities in the public sector was a big issue for the people and it could be addressed by the construction of the proposed government medical college complex soon.
Though the project envisaged construction of a medical college, hospital and a medi-city, at a cost of Rs. 800 crore, the medical college and hospital would be constructed in the initial phase at a cost of Rs.350 crore.
The foundation stone for the medical college project would be laid on July 12, Mr. Chandy said.
The complaints of farmers in some areas of the district regarding not accepting land tax for their pattaya land would be solved soon, Mr. Chandy said.
The title deeds for the deserving 400 farmers among 1,400 applicants would be disbursed soon, he said.
Financial assistance to sickle cell anaemia patients would be increased from Rs.1,000 to Rs. 2,000 a month.
A virology laboratory would be set up at Sulthan Bathery in the wake of the recent outbreak of the Kysanur Forest Disease (KFD) in the district, he said.
The financial assistance to the KFD patients would be hiked to Rs.20,000 and a financial aid of Rs.10,000 would be given to the suspected KFD patients.
The solatium to the kin of the KFD deceased has been increased from Rs. one lakh to Rs.3 lakh.
A post-matric hostel would be set up in each taluk and a tribal college would be launched at Makkimala near Mananthavady this year to ensure better education for tribal children , Mr. Chandy said.
Mr. Chandy also announced a special project, ‘Karuthal,’ for completing the house construction of tribesmen, who were yet to complete the works owing to various reasons.
